‘A beautiful and long overdue portrait of one of America’s true living cultural treasures.’
JOHN ZORN

‘The perfect companion-piece to the music of its subject.’
MOJO

‘Outlines the subject’s life in a series of scrupulous strokes and intimate interviews that are rare in such undertakings . . . a cool, casual victory.’
IRISH TIMES

Over a period of forty-five years, Bill Frisell has established himself as one of the most innovative and influential musicians at work today.

Growing up playing clarinet in orchestras and marching bands, Frisell has progressed through a remarkable range of musical personas – from devotee of jazz master Jim Hall to ‘house guitarist’ of estimable German label ECM, from edgy New York downtown experimentalist to plaintive country and bluegrass picker. He has been a pioneering bandleader and collaborator, a prolific composer and arranger and a celebrated Grammy Award winner.

A quietly revolutionary guitar hero who has synthesised many disparate musical elements into one compellingly singular sound, Frisell connects to a diverse range of artists and admirers, including Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Gus Van Sant, Marianne Faithfull and Justin Vernon, many of whom feature in this book.

Through unprecedented access to the guitarist and interviews with his close family, friends and associates, Philip Watson tells Frisell’s story for the first time.

‘Stuffed with musical encounters, so many that every couple of pages there’s an unheard Frisell recording for the reader to chase down.’
NEW YORKER

‘Superb . . . the book races along like Sonny Rollins in full sail. Like subject, like writer: this is super-articulate, adventurous prose.’
PERSPECTIVE

‘[Watson’s] writing balances unbridled passion and dispassionate research nearly as deftly as Mr. Frisell’s playing does sound and silence . . . compelling.’

I would have probably preferred a ghost-written autobiography, but this book was very engaging. I’m sure it’s difficult to capture Bill Frisell, but this book did a good job.

45TH PARALLEL
Bill Frisell – The Guitarist Who Changed The Sound Of American Music.

I don’t buy many books, about 1 a year – not having the attention span to actually finish reading them!
This book is however, one that grasps the reader from the start, and author Phillip Watson had made up his mind that he wanted to write a book about Bill Frisell after he first met him at one of his gigs, so you could say that the finished product had finally got here, 35 years in the making!
The book is an exhaustive study right from the start of Frisells life up to the present day, and no details on his life story have been left out – childhood, formative years (though he would probably claim he is still living his formative years!!), work ethic, family life – his mysterious illness, though there are many other things to fit in, and in this book the music comes first, and there is so much more detail to get through!
It has been a work of sheer tenacity by the author (his first book!) to get all the the information necessary to write this all down, and it becomes increasingly engaging the further i delve into the book, I was alert enough to spot one spelling mistake on page 181 though, Lol……
Frisell, it has been said, has appeared on 350+ albums not including his own, (about 50?) and I thought I was doing well owning a mere 82 albums, with Bill’s plaintive sounding guitar playing much to the fore.
Apparently, Bill’s biggest selling albums with 100 thousand copies sold is ‘Good Dog, Happy Man’, and the much derided by some, ‘Nashville’ for not being jazz, and sounding more like country and western.
I personally think there is some great playing on this album by Frisell, and it rowed in with sales of 80 thousand copies sold.
Only saw him twice play ‘Live’ at the Adrian Boult Hall in Birmingham in the 1990’s -1993 and 1998 to be accurate. Don’t think of acquiring this book – just buy it! Bill Frisell is one of the greats of guitar still living.

Bill Frisell; a wonderful musician who has a very wonderful life story to tell (well, someone else tells it, of course). As all mod and contemporary jazz fans know, Bill has made some beautiful and remarkable records; all very different and unique. A 21st guitar genius. Great read!
