Attributes of Autism: The Movement Sensing Perspective PDF

Autism: The Movement Sensing Perspective is the result of a collaborative effort by parents, therapists, clinicians, and researchers from all disciplines in science including physics, engineering, and applied mathematics. This book poses questions regarding the current conceptualization and approach to the study of autism, providing an alternative unifying data-driven framework grounded in physiological factors. Autism: The Movement Sensing Perspective

This book reaches beyond subjective descriptions of autistic phenomena and embraces a new era of objective measurements, analyses, and statistical inferences. The authors harness activities from the nervous systems across the brain and body (often in tandem), and introduce a platform for the comprehensive personalized phenotyping of individuals with autism. The impact of this approach is discussed to advance the development of tailored treatments options, enhance the ability to longitudinally track symptomatology, and to fundamentally empower affected individuals and their families. This book encompasses a new era for autism research and treatments, and our continuous effort to collectively empower and embrace the autistic community.

The Writers

Elizabeth B. Torres

she received my PhD in Cognitive Science in 2001 from the University of California, San Diego and did her Post-Doctoral training in electrophysiology at CALTECH. She have been on the faculty at Rutgers since 2008. her research combines theory and experiments to study how primates plan, execute, learn and adapt to natural voluntary motions. Clinical application is an integral part of my research effort. She study stroke patients, Parkinson’s patients and derive general indexes of performance that emerge from geometric and topological relations between extra-personal and internal representations of the primate brain. She clinical research has shown that these indexes are under cognitive control. They consequently facilitate the measurements and the diagnosis of specific sensory-motor deficits, the identification of their source and the design of therapies to improve motor learning and performance in activities of every-day life.

Recently she is extending these computational measures of sensory-motor performance in adults to the developmental stages of pre-pubertal individuals. In particular her laboratory will assess a broad range of natural voluntary behaviors in children who suffer from autism and other developmental disabilities. The main goal of this component of her research is to provide early intervention therapies to improve communication skills and social interactions in these young individuals.

Nina Jones
Research-based perspective on the physical manifestations of autism through neurological study.
February 16, 2018

This book illustrates why we should consider autism a neurological difference. Torres offers research and interpretations of movement sensing research as it pertains to autism. This book is comprehensive and academic, yet, contains conclusions at the end of each chapter which make sense to anyone who finds research jargon challenging. Torres suggests we should be measure autism much in the way we quantify parkinson’s disorder–through neurological measure. So refreshing!
