The Authors

Bernard Koong is a highly experienced oral and maxillofacial radiologist practicing full time multimodality clinical radiology. He is a founding partner of Envision Medical Imaging, a multidisciplinary fully comprehensive private radiology group in Australia and also consults internationally. He has personally reported over 200,000 radiological studies involving a wide variety of imaging techniques.
Having completed his specialist training in oral and maxillofacial radiology at the University of Toronto, Bernard now holds the position of Clinical Professor at the University of Western Australia, where he coordinates and delivers the oral and maxillofacial radiology lectures for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses. He also has a long history of providing oral and maxillofacial radiology courses for other universities as well as surgery and radiology programmes across Australasia. As an invited speaker, Bernard has presented more than 100 lectures to the dental and medical professions internationally, and is a member of the Editorial Board of Clinical Oral Implant Research.

Lovely Pictures

The art in this book is really lovely. The artist’s talent really shines on every page, and there are lots of examples of Japanese/Japanese-American culture like origami and kimonos in the book for you to discuss and share with your little one. My only complaint about the layout is that the text is way smaller than it needs to be. (There’s plenty of unused space on the pages that could have been filled with larger text.) If you like to download books on your phone, like I do, you may find yourself squinting.

Unfortunately, there’s no story. The book is really more of a character description than a story. Sometimes Keiko feels invisible. Sometimes she feels brave. Sometimes she feels proud of herself. Sometimes she wishes she were more like her classmates. But she is always loved. Personally, I would have liked a real story.

That said, this book would be a really sweet gift for a little girl named “Keiko.” Or you could substitute your own daughter’s name and use it to fill her with love and affirmations before bed.

GIRL POWER

I review a lot of children’s books, especially picture books. This one is quite unusual in a number of ways. For one thing, the author specifically wrote this book to provide a representation of an Asian American girl. The young girl’s struggles to fit in are obvious and possible racism is there almost from the start. But there is also a strong message of girl power with inspirational words on every page.

Because I am assuming you are considering acquiring this book for your child, I will tell you the plot. Spoilers abound.

PLOT: Japanese-American Keiko wishes “to change the world and shine.” This book tells her journey from feeling invisible to being in the Oval Office. The actual plot is minimal. The book is more a list of statements than a story.

TEXT: Somewhat advanced vocabulary for a picture book. There are just a couple of sentences in small print on each page, but then one large colorful word leaps off the page:
