A little “too” basic
December 5, 2016
I recently ordered this textbook for a graduate level course. It arrived right on time and in perfect condition. It is also very easy to read and is a fairly thick book – I was glad I got my money’s worth. However, I have found this book to be a little too basic for the graduate level. If you are an SLP just starting out this is a great resource but will probably need to be used in combination with other recourses.

A book that expertly covers both the art and science of working with people with neurogenic communication disorders
February 23, 2016
This is the book that professors who teach neurogenic communication disorders have been waiting for a long time. One of the best books EVER written on neurogenic communication disorders. In the preface to the book, the author discusses preparation for this book including polling over 200 slp students and instructors in 50 programs for what they wanted from a neurogenic communication disorders textbook. The results show this effort. In addition to a wonderful text, the online resources accompanying this book are exemplary. Dr. Hallowell as the intellect of a researcher, the soul of a true visionary, and the teaching approach of a master professor. The book is well laid out and accessible for both the student new to neurogenic communication disorders as well the seasoned speech-language pathologist looking for a book that challenges clinical practice. It’s focus is on developing oneself as a exemplary clinician. As a result, it covers areas not typically found in aphasia texts such as legal and ethical issues, medical terminology, cultural and global diversity, dealing with difficult issues such as depression, and digestible evidence based practice. The book contains throughout a person and family centric view of working with people with aphasia, including frequent use of the framework of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).
