Good.. but not as great as I had hoped it would be

At 450 pages, I had high hopes for this book! Having already purchased her earlier book, I had some expectations when going into this one.

While there are many good photos, I found the overall selection of photos, and layout of the book, to be quite frustrating and disappointing.

I’ve attached some samples. You can see how there are some very odd choices of some photos to turn into 2-page spreads while other (great) photos are only showed as an in-lay with multiple per page, taking up just a couple inches.

Do we really need a 6 page layout dedicated to Caitlyn Jenner, or several 2-page spreads showing a blurry photo or empty room instead of some of the great images that appeared in vogue and other magazines? Overall it left some to be desired.

I’ve attached some photos which I also think were good, and you can see how the mix between odd choices just doesn’t blend as well with the others.

There’s also some carryover from the earlier books, but presented at a much smaller size in this one.

I feel that making it a 2-volume set would have fit the book better than the current layout.

Another small issue was with the shape of the book (mostly square) which affected it from displaying photos nicely as if it were a wide book. This means larger photos split across 2 pages instead of having dedicated pages to better view them

If you already have another Annie Leibovitz, especially Portraits, then you have already seen MOST of the content of this book. A LOT of repeated images. Most of the new content, largely coming from themed photo sets for magazines (e.g., the Alice in Wonderland shoot) are collapsed into 4-6 images per page, and these aren’t even the raw photos, they are photos of the other books opened to those pages, which is a TERRIBLE way to try to view these images. Skip this one, get one of the other books, this is just a money-grab.

Arrived damaged -ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE

I splurged for the signed edition. Which looked printed or stamped. Heavy book wrapped in plastic bag and shipped. of course, arrived with damaged spine and pages. There is absolutely no care when packs/ships items. Wasteful & shameful. So disappointed. Tried reaching out to both & the book dealer with no response.
That said, the book is beautiful. Linen cover. Not oversized. Paper, Plates/color are quality.

fantastic survey of her work; my favorite so far

For me, my favorite book of hers to date, aside from the large Phaidon ‘Sumo’ book. I saw her last show at the Hauser & Wirth Gallery which was fantastic and mostly reportage work, a bit of that is in here, along with a great survey of fashion and editorial work, with some engaging captions and stories to help fill in some of the details and back story. Really great at capturing some important moments from the last few decades. A great addition to my collection.

Ich bin hin und weg von diesem Bildband. Die Bilder sind wunderschön und außergewöhnlich zugleich. Eigentlich auch ganz unaufgeregt schön und gleichzeitig erzählen sie Geschichten auf eine ruhige Art und Weise. Ich habe das Buch zum Verschenken bestellt und muss gestehen, dass ich es jetzt gern selbst hätte. 😉

Auch die Qualität ist toll. Dickes und robustes Papier, toller Einband.

Das Buch ist wunderschön mit Stoffeinband aufgemacht. In diesem Fotoband wird gezeigt, wie Annie Leibovitz nicht nur Fotografien von Personen abbildet, sondern ein Porträt im Sinne einer Charakterdarstellung dieser Persönlichkeit uns entgegenhält. Die Fotos sind genial inszeniert. Person und Umgebung bzw. Hintergrund sind perfekt aufeinander abgestimmt. Überwiegend Frauen werden dargestellt, ob Michelle Obama, Nicole Kidman, Schwangere, Sportlerinnen oder einfach unbekannt, unser Blick wird hinter die Maske eines Menschen geführt. Prädikat wertvoll!
