The Writers
John Railey has spent much of his life on the Outer Banks. A graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, he is the former editorial page editor of the Winston-Salem Journal. He has contributed to the Coastland Times and has won numerous national, regional and state awards for his writing and investigative reporting. His previous book from The History Press is The Lost Colony Murder on the Outer Banks: Seeking Justice for Brenda Joyce Holland (2021). He is also the author of the memoir Rage to Redemption in the Sterilization Age: A Confrontation with American Genocide.

Insights into a complicated NC hero

John Railey has shed light on the very private, complicated Andy Griffith and his love of Manteo, NC. Railey recounts Griffith’s life from his early years to his death and burial on Roanoke Island based on Griffith’s own words, the remembrances of his close friends on the island, as well as comments from former governors and those who worked on shows with him. This is an unvarnished view of the talented man, with many pictures sprinkled through the tale. I personally feel I have a much clearer view of the man I have idolized most of my life. The is easy to read and hard to put down at the end. You want it to continue.

Great book but difficult to read

First, let me say how much I admire the time and research that had to have gone into this book. It boggles the mind. With that being said, as much as I thoroughly enjoyed the content, it was difficult to read, at times, even for this avid reader. Thoughts weren’t completed, modifiers were misplaced, and paragraphs had more than one subject. It became a terrible distraction. I found myself losing interest and struggling to finish the book. This was such GREAT material. Better sentence structure would have done wonders for this book!!!

In our family, we love all things Andy Griffith. From the 45 record of “What It Was, Was Football” to the Andy Griffith Show Trivia Game to the full set of The Andy Griffith Show CDs we love our native son. And it is always wonderful to know more about the man which is why I really loved this new book by author John Railey giving us a unique perspective on how his life in Manteo shaped his interests, career, relationships and sense of community. A great summer beach read.

Author John Railey is an Outer Banks legend in his own right! His love of the Banks and summers spent there inspired him to write about NC’s favorite son, Andy Griffith. Growing up in NC, we all have heard the good and sometimes not-so-good stories about Andy. This book brilliantly brings to light some of the sources of Andy’s complicated persona. Andy was truly a giver and certainly his good outweighed his sometimes testy side. This is a fantastic read! If you have any interest in NC’s Andy Griffith, get this book! The photos are also fantastic!

This book will thrill folks who have spent time on the Outer Banks and Roanoke Island, and have maybe even caught a glimpse of Andy buying a broom at the Ace Hardware or saw him fishing from his pontoon boat by the Washington Baum bridge. Folks who just love Andy will be booking their next vacations here as they find out why Andy, whose acting career began here, never left the place for long.

Journalist/Author John Railey has done it again! Exquisitely written, this account of Andy Griffith’s life on the Carolina shore uncovers many facets (some sharp, others as smoothed as sea glass) of the actor’s personality and interactions with family, friends and co-workers. This is the real Andy Griffith, far outside of his “Sheriff Andy” persona. Highly recommended reading!

Reborn in Manteo, Andy came alive and went on to star in TV, movies, even making a record or two. John Railey captures all the aspects of Andy’s life, the love of life he had when he could be on his island and the angst he seemed to feel away from it. A must read.
