Michael States “Captivating History is stepping out on a tangent by putting resources into histories written for “kids.” I am not certain of the demographics that they are aiming for but “kids” in my mind suggest something in the range up to preteens. It would be my judgement that the language in Maya History for Kids, while toned down from Captivating History’s normal range, is still a little too progressive for the “kid” demographic.
Nevertheless, the content is well presented, and the writing does attempt to define some of the more unusual words that are used to describe the environment, the political and social structures.
I believe adults would enjoy this book as well as “kids” and I herald Captivating History’s attempt to bring history to young people.
Captivating History adds a three-hour read on the history of the Inca Empire. The text has been toned to a level appropriate for young adults, which is a challenge as the writing provides information which included one of the first ways people communicated without talking face to face.
There is a rich set of facts about the Inca and the reading does not fail to engage the reader. The book tests comprehension by offering challenges to the reader to evaluate what has been read.
I would expect that the best use of the text would have an adult guide “kids” through the chapters.
If any young person is looking for a simple and clear yet informative introduction to the Aztec people, this is an excellent candidate. One of the interesting facts shared is that in Aztec society, the elaborate costumes with jewelry, feathered headdresses and special clothing demonstrated one’s social status.
Many drawings demonstrate the style so frequently associated with Aztec designs. We also read of the myths and legends peculiar to this culture.
I would recommend this to any person despite their age as a satisfactory introduction to Aztec History.”
Part 1 (the Maya) The Maya developed the concept of zero long before it was known in the old world. Their calendar was one of the most accurate calendars developed in the world. With their mathematical concepts they were able to build their temples with precision. Along with mathematics the Maya studied the stars and the seasons to manage their agricultural pursuits. The golden age of the Maya was from about 250-1000 BCE during which time they reached the height of their massive temple building. Cities grew large and competed with each other for influence influence in the region. They relied on trade to gain the necessities and luxuries of life. Sometimes this competition led to war. During this golden age they believed their kings to be descended from the gods and in communication with them.
Part 2 (the Inca Empire) The Inca Empire lasted less than 200 years yet it was 3000 miles from one end to the other. Their system of government was efficient and messages were sent over a system of roads reaching every part of the empire. The Inca society was based on a class structure with the Inca class ruling the empire, the public admistrator class held lower level government positions and the commoner did all other work. At the time the Spanish came, the Inca Empire was the largest empire in the world but the Spanish conquered them and looted all the precious metals which faced the interior of many of their palaces, temples and government buildings.
Part 3 (the Aztecs) In this part you will learn why the Aztecs are so important to the Mexican people. Where did the name Mexico originate? What meaning lies behind the symbols on the Mexican flag? How long did the Aztec empire exist? The book is full of illustrations which give you a glimpse into the origin and life of the Aztecs, their customs and religion and why they are the foundation of Mexican social structure today. The book is written on a 4th to 6th grade level but the information is interesting for adults as well. The usual questions at the end of each chapter were missing and replaced by a set of questions at the end of the book. As a former educator I can highly recommend this book as both a learning tool and a reader. It will also be a great resource for home schooling or parent reinforcement.”
