Features of American Seoul: A Memoir PDF

She was everything everyone else wanted her to be. Until she followed her own path American Seoul: A Memoir pdf.

Helena Rho was six years old when her family left Seoul, Korea, for America and its opportunities. Years later, her Korean-ness behind her, Helena had everything a model minority was supposed to want: she was married to a white American doctor and had a beautiful home, two children, and a career as an assistant professor of pediatrics. For decades she fulfilled the expectations of others. All the while Helena kept silent about the traumas—both professional and personal—that left her anxious yet determined to escape. It would take a catastrophic event for Helena to abandon her career at the age of forty, recover her Korean identity, and set in motion a journey of self-discovery.

In her powerful and moving memoir, Helena Rho reveals the courage it took to break away from the path that was laid out for her, to assert her presence, and to discover the freedom and joy of finally being herself.

Sad story of a woman who was a victim of her culture and circumstances. Story was very choppy and confusing in places.

This book gives you the Seoul of Korea.

For the past 4 years I have been extremely interested in Korea and its culture. This book has given me a better understanding of the culture and people. I look forward to Dr. Rho’s first novel. I hjghly recommend American Seoul.

The title itself suggests the story’s many conflicts.

I am not Korean, so I think I am unable to fully understand the family and cultural demands that were placed upon this author during her formative years. But my former mother-in-law was Korean, raised in China, and came to the U.S., alone, as a young teenager. Most of her…

To the author for her honesty. From one korean girl to the next I SEE YOU. And thank you for an amazing book!

Shatteringly painful and quietly heroic

This book starts out holding back nothing. Seemingly typical morning for a mother dropping the children off at preschool and suddenly a car accident changes this pediatrician’s life. Not so much because of the injuries but because the true nature of those around her in her…

The book is not literature. It is just a totally disjointed & very poorly written narrative with little frame of reference. Shame on allowing it to be a recommendation.

I don’t understand.

I was born in Europe, live in the USA for 51 years. I remember my birth country, go for visits every few years, but I don’t see how someone wants to artificially identity with her birth country so much, when she hardly remembers it
