A Fabulous Read for animal lovers

I didn’t want to finish this book I loved it so much. I can’t wait to read ALL of James Herriot’s other books. The only “me time” I get is reading before bed. This is one of those books that makes you want to go to bed early so you can get more reading time before you fall asleep. Each chapter is a different animal story, all told with his brilliant English humor. And I learned quite a lot about farm animals I might add. If you love animals, you will love this book.

All Things Bright and Beautiful is the inspiring and warm story of a Yorkshire Vet’s practice

James Herriot (1916-1995) wrote several books about his veterinary practice in the Yorkshire Dells.
The first book is All Creature Great and Small. Herriot’s first sequel to that splendid debut book is All Things Bright and Beautiful. It is a delight to read! The story begins in the late 1930s. Herriot is adjusting to his recent marriage to the kind and beautiful Helen. He and his vet partners have a wide practice. They deal with large farm animals such as horses, cows and sheep. They also tend to pigs, cats, dogs and birds. James has to deal with early morning calls to come to farms, surly and grouchy farmers (as well as many nice ones who enjoy feeding him!) and feisty animals who sometimes kick! The book ends with James leaving Darrowby to enter the Royal Air Force at the beginning of the Second World War.
The book is filled with little stories about some of the animals Herriot has treated. Among my favorites are the story of an abused dog rescued by an old lady; a friendly specialist in small animals who enjoys taking James to fancy restaurants and drives like a demon across a cold snow wrapped landscape; a mean bull; difficult birthing of calves and sheep and a retired couple with a house full of cats! Another great tale is the author’s humorous purchase of several heavy Victorian books on World Geography purchased at an auction in Leeds.
Interest in James Herriot has been revived by the splendid new TV series. The books are fun and sad with Herriot sharing his years of wisdom and love with his legion of animal loving fans! A joy and a pleasure for all readers in this time of COVID-19 when our spirits need a positive boost!

If you want to laugh, cry, thoroughly love and enjoy animal stories as I do, this book is the best with which to do so. All of these books by this most magnificent English country veterinarian are extraordinary and well written. You will enter the world of this marvelous author in his personal and professional life. You will experience all the animals he treats, cures and helps in every way possible and you will sublet a room in your heart to him and his family and friends without reservation.

Very disappointing

I did not realize when I ordered book that it was used and has a sticker on the back saying so. the cover is plain black and pretty beat up and the inside looks like it taken out of the original binding and there is tape front and back.. it just looks ugly. I bought this book for my 12 year old grandson to go with All Creatures Great and Small that I gave him last year. I am going to return this one and hope to find another that looks much nicer to give him. I love Herriot and his stories and want to give my grand an insight to what wonderful people exist in the world. He needs to have his faith in people restored.

This book, the second in the series, is just perfect for reading aloud to my grandchildren. I will be ordering the third one soon! All Things Herriot are Great!
