Disappointed
August 16, 2018

I was really excited to see the edition of this classic text book. I was hoping to read all cutting edge information. The price of the kindle edition is almost the same as physical book but none of the videos or other supplemental material is available to the buyers unless they subscribe to access medicine. To test how recent the updates were, I tested out the subject of hypertension. Although the current hypertension guidelines were published in October 2017, this edition published in second half of 2018 still does not mention them and uses old classification of hypertension from 2003. I wonder if other topics have the same fate. So I can’t trust the latest edition to get the latest information.

Editing and Online Supplements
September 27, 2018

I have read selected portions of Harrison’s 20th. It is generally well written and a nice compendium of medical information. However, approximately 12% of Chapter 83, Benign and Malignant Diseases of the Prostate, is devoted to benign prostatic hyperplasia BPH and the remaining 88% to prostate cancer. For Cecil 25th the corresponding numbers are 48% and 52%, respectively, while in CMDT 2019 the percentages are 43 and 57. If Harrison’s is intended as a general internal medicine textbook for medical students or as a reference for general internists, then it seems that a more expanded coverage of BPH would be useful to them. In my mind this raises questions about the editing of Harrison’s. As an additional concern, I attempted to read one of the online supplementary chapters that is not contained in the printed book. It appears that this requires an expensive subscription to the entire AccessMedicine or access through a university library that has a subscription. Finally, the binding is falling apart after only minimal usage.

Saved me

I’m not a doctor or even close as I’m only a second year cell and molec bio undergrad but I love these books. Two reasons. I learn some of the biology and bits of the physio in school but these books show me how it can apply to the real world and in everyday clinical situations. Also I have my own health problems and I consult these all the time and the flow charts have helped me treat myself when I don’t have access to a M.D. The first time I had an Addison’s disease crisis I didn’t understand what was happening and had the section bookmarked. I was really out of it but I saw the bookmark and just did what it said with hydrocortisone and electrolytes and was able to get out of my bed finally and to the E.R soon after for real help.
