It’s Good (Great, actually) to Read The King!
December 1, 2021

I loved this book from the first page. Right from the get go, where Mel recounts his happy childhood in Brooklyn, I felt like I did as a child at my grandparents house, when my grandpa would tell stories of his own upbringing during The Great Depression. It was like I was back in that kitchen and those stories were being told to me alone.
Mel manages to maintain that warm tone of storytelling straight to the reader throughout his youth, service in World War II and long career as a writer, actor, director and producer. The stories are frequently sprinkled with tangential stories and non-sequiturs that convey his manic energy and stream of consciousness that is so much a part of his movies and shows that fans are familiar with, as well as contributing to that personal storytelling feel, as if he is conveying things that just pop into his head that relate to what he was talking about.
Another thing to love about this book is that it will give you a greater appreciation of the impact Mel has made on the entertainment industry as a whole. Sports analysts frequently cite ‘coaching trees’ when talking about the impact a well-regarded coach or manager has had on subsequent generations of coaches. Mel Brooks has an entire forest in entertainment, writers, actors, songwriters, composers, directors, producers, the whole schmear. As an example, when looking for a director for the Brooksfilms-produced “The Elephant Man,” Mel was instrumental in hiring a largely unknown David Lynch, who at the time was only known for the brilliant, but weird and disturbing, “Eraserhead.” If Lynch had not had Mel in his corner and gotten “The Elephant Man,” we likely would never have had “Dune,” “Mulholland Drive,” “Blue Velvet,” or “Twin Peaks” (not to mention all the works that Lynch himself inspired). The roots of Mel’s entertainment trees spread throughout the industry.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is truly Good to be the King, but even better to witness his greatness.

I didn’t laugh out loud
December 6, 2021

I thoroughly enjoy Brook’s films. This book is mostly a review of how they got made. A laugh riot it isn’t. The most interesting part was the beginning several chapters that chronicle his early life and influences. The rest is a recounting of the efforts involved in securing the financial backing to make the films and hiring the actors and technical people he needed. Unfortunately, the repeated effusive terms used to describe these folks became off-putting and tiresome. Everyone he worked with was either marvelous or beautiful or fantastic or wonderful or exceptional, extremely talented or brilliant. It doesn’t seem real. Surely, he had some problems along the way, about which there is very little. This is a good effort to shore up his legacy and will be enjoyed by his aficionados.

An interesting account greatly harmed by absurdly excessive self-congratuation
December 29, 2021

While Mel Brooks is a great storyteller and this book is full of great stories, it becomes difficult and annoying to read once you get past the best parts… Mel’s childhood, service in WW 2, and work with the great Sid Caesar. Brooks’s self absorption is so great that it comes as a shock when he’s recounting the 1960s and casually mentions that his wife (who is never mentioned otherwise in any context, and is not even named) is divorcing him and that the marriage (never mentioned before) has produced three children, who are at least named, but never mentioned again until the last few pages of the book! Roughly half the book recounts his adventures as a film-maker, and the stories about those days would be interesting if one could trust them. An example of the problem is that anyone Brooks has ever met who has done him a favor is immediately described as now his best, dearest and closest friend, so that by the time the book ends he must have around 50 – 150 people who he can’t live without (but probably has never seen since they worked together!). No one is mentioned who is disliked by Brooks. The book really goes entirely off the rails when Brooks recounts his experiences in turning his film THE PRODUCERS into a Broadway musical. I greatly feared that I would learn Brooks had permanently disabled his arm patting himself on the back! Recommended if you like books about show business, but your mileage may vary!
I like and admire Brooks… who wouldn’t?… but this book was sometimes a chore to read.

I already read an excerpt about GET SMART. It was super interesting. I can’t wait to read the rest of Mel Brooks’ behind-the-scenes stories.

ALL ABOUT ME
December 3, 2021

I enjoyed this book. Immensely!

It was written as if I were in a room with a very funny man reminiscing about his terrific feeling for life as he was speaking just to me.

Thanks for years of laughs, Mel Brooks. You really brightened up many of my days especially;;u when I needed my spirits uplifted. I have watched his movies over and over because they were just that good.

A remarkable talent and still going strong at 95! A great read from beginning to end. Amazing!

Fun but not enough
December 20, 2021

This is an enjoyable runthrough of Brooks’s work but without
a lot of substance beyond his reminiscences of his
early years — youth, army, live TV. The stories about his
films are amusing but superficial. Everyone he worked
with is talented and wonderful. No dark clouds ever appeared
on his horizon, even very much when he fought
the Nazis (or the “Narzis,” as he recalled Churchill
calling them). I recommend Patrick McGilligan’s thorough biography
for a more detailed, investigative, honest look into Brooks’s actual life and work.

Disappointing
December 25, 2021

Mel Brooks is a legend, a creative genius, and an international treasure. For those reasons, I was looking forward to this deep dive into his life.

But with the exception of the beginning few chapters about his upbringing, military service, and early career, the book was a chronicle of each of his movies, in painful detail, from actors (all perfect), to funders (the same), on to the next success. It became an anthology rather than memoir, in need of a good edit. I couldn’t wait until the end.

Brooks has got perfect comedic timing and has given many of us lives full of laughter. Regrettably, on this one he missed.
