I read this book in a day. And as I was reading, pictures from my childhood kept popping up in my head. I feel like I know myself and my parents so much better now and also how trauma is passed on to the next generation. I made so many connections to my own life reading about the therapy sessions of strangers and the authors insights. I always read books with a pencils to underline key passages and write notes off to the side. I underlined almost the entire book. I am going to read it agin, but slower.

In the middle of reading this compelling new book, I put it down to order copies for my two siblings. Now that I have finished, I decided to give copies to my own grown children as well.
This is a book that should be read by anyone who comes from a family, was ever part of a family or has a family. In other words, pretty much everyone.

It is a beautiful, sensitive, intelligent book, clearly written by a scholar who is an expert in her field. But this book is written from the heart. And the soul. The author compassionately tells the
stories of the people who come to her for help with the pain in their lives, while weaving the stories of her own life throughout the narrative. From these the reader learns how we are all affected by the unspoken emotional legacies we inherit from our ancestors. All families have secrets and ghosts that haunt our lives in the present. Dr. Atlas demonstrates how past demons can be faced and reckoned with, no matter how far back in one’s family history they can be found, and offers hopeful possibilities of a present and future freed from the chains of the past.
