Features of A New Approach to Stuttering: Diagnosis and Therapy PDF
The author presents a new approach to the therapy of stuttering. Instead of accepting stuttering and trying to make it more fluent, he prefers to motivate a patient to effectively battle the condition. This book presents a theoretical basis for such an approach and offers diagnostic tools, including normalised and standardised scales as well as questionnaires for examining patients with stuttering in different age groups. While guest authors review research on the effects of pharmacotherapy, which is regarded as controversial by many, the author focuses on discussing the approach and achievements of Central and Eastern European therapists which have not been heard of in the USA and Western European countries. The author presents particular methods for solving the problems of patients with stuttering and considers motivation to therapy important, though it is reduced due to the acceptance of the disorder. Although he supports using natural speech in the course of therapy, he does not reject other techniques. On the contrary, the author believes that therapeutic methods should be adjusted to the needs and abilities of a patient instead of forcing said patient to use a method simply because it is universal. Head of Department of Pathology and Rehabilitation of Speech, Medical University of Lublin, Poland.
Zbigniew Tarkowski is a civil engineering technician by education. Although he did not attend any polytechnic, he has built three houses for his family, all in beautiful surroundings. He graduated from Faculty of Education and Psychology, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and completed Postgraduate Logopaedic Studies. Being a researcher and therapist, he specialises in psychogenic speech disorders (stuttering, mutism, etc.). Dr. Tarkowski developed standardised and normalised tests (e.g., Language Skills Test), scales (e.g., Reaction to Speech Disfluency Scale), questionnaires (e.g., Questionnaire about Speech Fluency Disorders Questionnaire) and therapeutic programmes (e.g., Systems Therapy of Stuttering). He has authored numerous articles and monographs. His most recent publications include: A New Approach to Stuttering. Diagnosis and Therapy (2017), Speech Pathologies (2017), and Children with Behavioural, Emotional and Speech Disorders (2016). He has been working at the Medical University of Lublin as a full professor for many years. Dr. Tarkowski was previously the chairman of the Polish Logopaedic Society and remains a board member.

Small but comprehensive ultrasound book of the hand and wrist

Ultrasonography of the hand in rheumatology is an excellent resource for scanning the hand and wrist. The sonoanatomy chapter gives a detailed but easy to follow guide to the sonographic views. The anatomical structures are clearly labeled on the ultrasound images and the corresponding probe position is shown on a patient model. The text contains lots of helpful information such as how to optimize imaging, avoid artifacts and use dynamic maneuvers. The sonopathology chapter is my personal favorite (as a rheumatologist). This chapter contains outstanding quality images depicting pathological features of commonly encountered inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, seronegative spondyloarthropathy and crystal disease. In addition to these two chapters the book also contains a concise chapter on clinical examination and a fantastic anatomy chapter with photos of cadaveric cross sections which are very helpful for understanding relationships between different structures for sonographic scanning. Additionally, the book features a chapter on other imaging techniques (X-ray, MRI, CT and PET) highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each technique compared to ultrasound. This chapter also discussed comparative imaging (fusion) of ultrasound and other imaging data sets. This book is relatively small but is very dense. It is a great resource for rheumatologists (and other practitioners/sonographers imaging the hand and wrist) who want to advance their ultrasound skills and knowledge. My only wish is that it came with online access to the contents. Perhaps the next edition!
