Luke is an apprentice leather worker, training with his family to one day take over the business. He and his friends Andre, Taylor, and Zed have known each other forever, and swear that nothing will ever tear apart their friendship.

Then the Royal Decree comes. With the Dynasty of Dogs invading, and strange monsters appearing in the Hollow Kingdom, a draft has been implemented. Well, that was… Something?

Pro: creative premise, very interesting takes on some classic rpg tropes, some clever humor and references.

Con: There are 3x perspective MC’s, but i found Taylor, the “Archmage”, so unmemorable I actually forgot her name after I finished and Luke, the titular “Murderhobo” to be off putting, so darkly tragicomic that I’m often not quite sure when his scenes were meant to be funny and when they’re meant to be sad. I actually might not have finished it if not for Andre, the Terraformer, who felt like Dakota had swiped one of my old D&D sheets for a Verdant Lord Druid and brought it to glorious life.

I don’t like giving one of my absolute favorite authors a mere 3 stars. This book has a solid start in worldbuilding and a great set piece battle for the climax, but the middle section lost my emotional investment in 2/3 MC’s. It’s not a short book by any means, but multi-MC stories need correspondingly higher page counts to properly develop the characters and I feel like some essential transitions were lost in editing. Hopefully a sequel helps fix that, or perhaps I can hope for an “extended edition” at some point.

An interesting premise and world, ‘Something’ has a great start, it’s a shame that’s all it has going for it.
The main focus of the book is three characters; Luke, Andre, and Taylor. Somehow each and everyone of them is unlikable at best.
By the halfway point I had to struggle to keep reading, I just couldn’t immerse myself in the world anymore, in large part because I no longer sympathize with the three.
What started out as a fantasy world with plenty of potential ended with a resounding meh.

Laughed so hard I fell out of the chair

Mr. Krout is an excellent writer and I have enjoyed his other series. However, this one was fantastic. I will acknowledge that, you may need to have played D&D to fully realize the humor in a group with a murderhobo. However, even if you didn’t, the book is well written, and there is even a “plausible” explanation for why the character is that way. Which is more than I can say for the groups that I played with. The book is fast paced, and the first in a series. The only slight downside is that the book bounces between viewpoints of the group throughout the book, and for some that may be a detractor. However, I promise the reason for the various viewpoints becomes clear late in the book and it makes the entire thing well worth it. I stayed up way later than I should have finishing this book, and I laughed so hard at various points I fell out of the chair. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys a good book, or anyone who has played D&D with a murderhobo group.

This is Definitely Something Worth Reading

Dakota takes a step off into a new series with this book. It’s a new world with new characters and it’s a delight!

The story unfolds from multiple viewpoints and characters and you really get a quick grasp on their personalities and psyches. All of it is entertaining and filled with the puns you know to expect from Dakota.

The stats and system are consistent with the quality we have come to expect from Dakota and are slipped into the storyline seamlessly.

This is a well-written book – great start to a new series!
