Features of Lean Design in Healthcare PDF

This book gives the reader an inside look at creating a new healthcare service using practical examples and scenarios one would face if doing it themselves. This book chronicles the journey of a fictitious healthcare delivery organization using the Simpler Design System principles based on Lean methodologies. While the characters and actual story is fictitious, it is based on the journey many healthcare systems and clients have taken, the issues they have faced, and the successes and failures they’ve had. Tools and approaches used are based on the current work of Simpler. The story format engages readers and is intended to motivate and inspire executive teams to use the tenets of the book as a guide to launch their own successful implementation of an idea-to-launch methodology. Tools include those gleaned from current application of Lean Product Development, Agile, Design for Six Sigma, and Design Thinking Principles.

Through engaging storytelling and practical theory, this book is written from the perspective of a physician leader who agrees to be the executive sponsor for a service redesign. As the story progresses, the sponsor becomes fascinated with the process and becomes the first VP of Innovation within his organization.

Top reviews

If you are seeking some perspective about innovation through a provocative lens, consider Adam’s fresh look at this subject. It may challenge you to think differently about what you have seen, done or experienced in the past.

The style of the book is different than conventional narratives. You will get a ring side seat like on a journey with the coach (Adam) and the team (the other players) as if you were present, too. The story exposes the team to real life issues, barriers, push back, etc., when bumped up against an entrenched status quo position by the many others. Despite the discouragement and frustration at times, the coach slowly works to disrupt the same old ways of prevailing. Instead he ‘pulls’ the team and enterprise through these knot holes, bringing them forward to a new way of thinking and acting. Over a period of time, positive changes are realized including a change in the thinking lens of people which will have lifetime growth as a new way to creating solutions.

A little tease about some of the content you might enjoy
• Just what is a coach?
• How do you define innovation?
• Why do you choose what metrics and when?
• Is your ‘how-to’ effective? Anymore?
• What is your selection approach to team creation?
• Can people see what is happening?
• Is your governance effective? Evolving to best suitability over time?
• Ever used RED framework thinking?
• Iteration thinking is essential?

A few additional reflections from me:
• Adam suggests the biggest waste is creating something new……that nobody wants
• I would add a similar waste is improving something already created……that wants nobody
• Adam explains details of some really good tools to use in innovation
• One of my favorites is the relentless use of voice of the customer (VOC). Well this tool should be used in operational lean as well. Repeatedly it is brushed over with a premature rush to a solution without defining the need or value defined by the customer

So buckle up and get ready to reflect on the message Adam delivers in this book!
