The Authors
Dr. Kliegman was awarded his medical degree from the State University of New York at Downstate Medical Center in 1974. He trained as a pediatric intern and resident (1974-76) at The Babies Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. After completing a clinical neonatology and a metabolic research fellowship in 1979 at Case Western Reserve University, he became an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at that same institution. In 1985, he was promoted to Associate Professor, and in 1986 he became Vice Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Case. In 1991 he was promoted to full Professor. While at Case Western Reserve, Dr. Kliegman served as the Director of the Pediatric House Staff Training Program and the Associate Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Kliegman accepted the position of Pediatric Department Chair at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1993 and was also appointed Pediatrician-in-Chief at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. In 2000, Dr. Kliegman was named the Pamela and Leslie Muma Chair of Pediatrics, and in 2004 he was appointed the Executive Vice President of the Children’s Research Institute. Dr. Kliegman’s research interests include neonatology, perinatal glucose insulin relationships, neonatal nutrition, perinatal public health, and perinatal ethics. Following his fellowship, he had NIH support until 1996. He is currently emeritus chair at the Medical College of Wisconsin, teaching students, residents, and fellows and also leading a program to help care for children with rare and undiagnosed diseases.
