 A Truly Beautiful Classic

April 1, 2020

I just finished reading all of Herriot’s books for the second time. I very seldom reread books, but his novels are so beautifully written that rereading them was like revisiting a very special place. His descriptions of the English countryside and the local people make you feel as if you live there and know them all on a first name basis. His tales from his veterinary practice are both fascinating and poignant. He was an amazing author, family man, veterinarian, and all around decent human being.

I highly recommend all his novels, preferably read in order, his children’s books, and last but not least, his son’s equally beautiful biography of his father (whose real name was Alfred Wight).

Part of a Most Wonderful Series!

January 22, 2021

Have recently read all five of the James Herriot’s “All Creatures Great and Small” series and they are some of the most wonderful books I have read! The most amazing thing is that they are all true stories being the actual memoires of the veterinarian’s lifetime career in the Yorkshire countryside. I usually only read fiction but these stories are far more charming and interesting than anything you could make up. And it is largely because of Herriot’s point-of-view. The same stories told without his warmth, humor and insight to what he was really thinking would have been far less engaging. Would highly recommend all and the series which is now part of a new Masterpiece Theatre series which has just begun.

 It keeps getting better.

March 18, 2021

I just finished the third book. The story keeps getting better. I gave it five stars, because it deserves at least that much. To say that it’s well written is an understatement. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the flashbacks were interspersed with his time serving in the RAF. He shows the reader how important his time in Darrowby meant in his life. That’s what the story is about: life. His reflective style encourages the reader to reflect on the blessings of life and how they help people get through difficult times and grow from them. I would write more, but I’m ready to read the next book. Read this book!

A Book to Lift Your Spirits!

I enjoyed every word of All Things…James Herriot describes his experiences while training for the RAF. As usual, his insightful descriptions of the characters he meets make the reader feel s/he is there. He is often reminded of home and so, most of his storytelling continues in the bucolic setting of his veterinary career. Mr. Herriot’s writing is full of delicious character nuance, a warm understanding of his 4 legged patients and a poetic appreciation of natural beauty. The book transports you into his world and leaves you feeling uplifted.

 All You Expect from Herriot

May 1, 2016

This is everything you expect from a Herriot book. I think this one has been the best of the three, partly because I enjoyed the mix of Yorkshire memories with RAF memories. This one definitely has the biggest tear-jerker for cat people with the story about a feral cat named Debbie (which has a bittersweet, hopeful ending that still makes me cry thinking about it), balanced with the story of Oscar, the cat who liked to go to meetings.

There was one story that I thought I had already read, but it may have been in one of the previews.

I also enjoyed him finally having a gotcha moment or two, instead of always being the victim of them.

Well worth getting, especially if is running a deal on it.

 An Absolute Treat !

Another wonderful collection of stories from James Herriot! Just like “Great and Small”, this is a delightful, beautifully written book which I found very hard to put down. Herriot ‘s love of his work, the animals he treats, his colleagues at Skeldale House and most of all, the amazing countryside around him, shine through with great warmth on every page. One of the beauties of the book is that every chapter tells a different story, so the reader never loses interest. James Herriot must surely rank amongst the top three authors in Britain and I would recommend that everyone – and I mean everyone – should read this book. It’s interesting, fun and truly captivating
