A little over the top but nice to see Theo and Jessica again

This book starts out very fast paced but slows down significantly about 40% of the way through. I felt like it got bogged down in a lot of details that weren’t necessary to move the story forward (e.g. – numerous pages about reconstructing dinosaur DNA – which I didn’t find interesting and certainly wasn’t necessary to explain how a computer could piece together the strips of a shredded document).

I’ve read 2 of the Theo Cray books and all the Jessica Blackwood books (twice), so I had a pretty good background on the lead characters. And I like the idea of them working together. But I felt like there was something missing in this book a- it didn’t flow as well as the previous books I had read by this author. Not to mention that some of it is way over-the-top – I understand you have to suspend your disbelief for a good fiction book but there are some ideas that come across as something from the imagination of a teenage science geek.

I would have liked to have seen more of Jessica’s illusionist skills come into play – I love books in which illusionists or mentalists help solve crimes. And while I really enjoyed the first Theo Cray book, The naturalist, by the third book in the series, Theo’s martyr complex was wearing me out. And there was a lot of that in this book too.

So overall not a bad book, but definitely not one of the best books I’ve read this year. I would have given it a 3.5 if that had been an option but I didn’t want to insult the author by giving it at 3.

I thought they couldn’t get any better. I thought like other book series they would plateau and then decline slowly then move up again through a fan service title and then maybe something toward a new generation. Well, I’m no Theo Cray and I was wrong. This book is aptly named for the characters but the man writing is absolutely brilliant. Got my heart pounding several times and the end was exponentially better then I could have ever guessed. Please if your reading my review go read this book. Or listen. I’ve done both and just.. wow. Thank you Andrew. Exactly what I needed.

This book isn’t completely bad but as the continuation of a series where the players keep referring to past events that may make it partly sensible to a reader who knows what came before. As so often, it woke itself featuring a small female as a combination of Rambo and Chuck Norris. The first thread that started me down the bored path was this overly woke ridiculous character. The next yawn was another female who is head of the most fierce and super-secret agency of the US government. She, as well as her charges, is a different combination: Army Rangers and Navy SEALs. Then we get the male protagonist who is a sensitive soul that exceeds in caring for all including those who are trying to kill him. See the gender reversal? Get it? Get it? Yawn.

The writing is choppy mostly first person and it takes a bit of effort at the start of a narrative to scry out who is doing the talking. There’s also a bad guy who is the sum total of all bad people in the history of the Earth. This guy is everywhere but nowhere. He is up to some dastardly act wherever he may be or not be. Despite the players seeming to know this guy from the previous books, they can’t imagine what he’s up to.

He goes about the whatever in a highly dramatic over the top manner. His first move this book was to fill Manhattan with black soot that stopped at the edges of the island. After the forces that held the soot in place as well as generated the stuff, the book just moves on with the players and people in general having no particular interest in what thousands of tons of soot now let loose to fall on the island or blow away falling into the ocean or nearby land may do. We instead focus on how the male protagonist is so sensitive and caring.

The plot is absurd. The players aren’t interesting and drawn as unbelievable caricatures. I managed to make it about a third in and never was drawn in or had any interest in any of the actors. I’m also tired of this idiotic woke now sneaking into books. A female Rambo doesn’t inspire. It just leaves one fla
