INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Are you ready for the roller coaster ride that is The Club? . . . A beautifully written, densely plotted murder mystery that takes place at a private club off the coast of England. Read about a luxurious, celeb-only island during a weekend of partying and ultimately murder.” —Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club March ’22 Pick)

From the author of People Like Her comes a smart and sinister murder mystery set in the secretive world of exclusive celebrity clubs.

Everyone’s Dying to Join . . .

The Home Group is a glamorous collection of celebrity members’ clubs dotted across the globe, where the rich and famous can party hard and then crash out in its five-star suites, far from the prying eyes of fans and the media.

The most spectacular of all is Island Home—a closely-guarded, ultraluxurious resort, just off the English coast—and its three-day launch party is easily the most coveted A-list invite of the decade.

But behind the scenes, tensions are at breaking point: the ambitious and expensive project has pushed the Home Group’s CEO and his long-suffering team to their absolute limits. All of them have something to hide—and that’s before the beautiful people with their own ugly secrets even set foot on the island.

As tempers fray and behavior worsens, as things get more sinister by the hour and the body count piles up, some of Island Home’s members will begin to wish they’d never made the guest list.

Because at this club, if your name’s on the list, you’re not getting out.

 A slog

March 16, 2022

I might just not have been in the mood for this book and in fairness this is not usually my genre. I don’t care about the obnoxious personalities of the rich and famous–especially now with the world as it is I just dont care about their indulgences (of any kind). They are not interesting or likable people. So, just know that. I wanted the book to really give me a good story but, it just didn’t emerge from the celebrity bit for me. All characters are fictional, btw. I would think that would go without saying but not sure. Anyway, for a very occasional or casual reader, this might meet your needs. I wanted something light but the reading level and superfluous minutiae had me just skipping entire paragraphs quite a bit.

 Tedious. Too many coincidences.

March 14, 2022

I was confused because the first few days it was categorized as Ghost Fiction. Then “if your name is on the list, you are already dead.” What? Nope.
Tedious, too many coincidences, not believable under any circumstances.

Product was fine and in perfect condition…… however delivery was in poor judgment because it was raining and was put on dirt which soon would become mud…. Porch had dry area… luckily saw email of delivery before my package was soaked….Delivery very bad judgment based on weather conditions….. do not like packages in dirt or mud

Cleverly constructed mystery … but a touch overwritten.

I was very impressed by Ellery Lloyd’s debut novel, “People Like Her” and there is also a lot to like about the second book that the husband-and-wife writing partnership has produced. This time around the pair have produced another contemporary thriller, but on this occasion it is set in the glitzy, glamourous and exclusive world of a celebrity club rather than that of online “influencers”.

The narrative is provided from the viewpoints of a number of key protagonists, plus an additional perspective in the form of an article in “Vanity Fair” that appears at the end of each chapter. Events unfold across two timeframes, which is quite neatly handled: The “Vanity Fair” piece provides a retrospective report on events surrounding the opening of the latest addition to “The Home Group” portfolio, the “Island Home” club. The accounts from the other characters relate events as they were happening at the time of that same opening. As we gradually learn more about each of the narrators and the high profile members of “The Home Club” it soon becomes apparent that nobody is quite as they would appear and everybody has something to hide.

Like their previous thriller, “The Club” is a cleverly constructed mystery with plot lines that have been well thought through. The characterisation is also appealing and the two writers once again make a good fist of delivering authentic differentiation between the protagonists. Seeing the portrayals of the various world famous stars is great fun and also allows the reader to play their own game, guessing which real life celebrities may have provided the inspiration for these fictional creations.

All of that said, on the whole, I didn’t think this consistently matched the overall quality of Ellery Lloyd’s debut. It could have – and probably should have. The ingredients are all there to make this a top notch mystery thriller, but certain sections struck me as a touch overwritten and this, in turn, had an adverse effect on the pace of the novel. Nonetheless, this is still an enjoyable mystery and well worth adding to your reading list.
